The Department of Materials Science and Engineering was saddened to learn of the passing of our longtime friend and supporter, David C. Lincoln. Business Insider wrote of Mr. Lincoln's illustrious career:

"In addition to founding his own company, Lincoln Laser Company, David Lincoln took an active role in his family's many businesses, including Lincoln Electric Company, which his father founded in 1895 and built around a series of inventions that included the portable arc welder. Beyond its many innovations in electrical engineering, Lincoln Electric broke ground with its focus on an ethical corporate culture, which included guaranteed employment, an employee advisory board, life and health insurance plans that few companies offered at the time, and a generous annual cash bonus."

In 2015, Mr. Lincoln made a transformational gift to our welding engineering program:

With a $1 million donation, Cleveland-based Lincoln Electric and David Lincoln have co-funded the first endowed professorship in welding engineering at The Ohio State University. Lincoln Electric also donated or consigned nearly $420,000 worth of welding equipment and technology for use by Ohio State students and faculty.
