Growing and maintaining a diverse culture within the student, staff and faculty populations in an inclusive and supportive environment is the responsibility of leadership, faculty, and administration within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. As such, we are committed to supporting the academic and personal success of students within the welding engineering and materials science and engineering programs by offering lectures, workshops, mentoring, and committees to enhance diversity.
Ohio State values diversity in people and ideas. We're an inclusive, supportive community where you can comfortably join in and confidently stand out.
Climate and Inclusivity Initiatives
- Continue to increase student, faculty and staff representation on the department's Climate and Inclusivity Committee (CIC).
- Social justice content was embedded into the engineering ethics curriculum in Fall 2018.
- All staff, faculty, and GTAs will be required to complete professional development and training as part of the College of Engineering's Action Plan for Racial Equity and Inclusion (Focus Area 1)
- The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers two faculty advocates to address complaints, comments, or issues related to departmental equity and inclusivity from students, staff, and faculty; where appropriate and/or necessary, they will serve to move relevant issues to appropriate university resources.

- An anonymous department-level bias and discrimination reporting system has been created for students, staff, as an alternative to department advocates.
- A regular communications format is being developed to provide MSE/WE members with updates on department-related climate and inclusivity issues.
- A newly created faculty mentoring program has been organized to help the success of diverse and underserved student populations.
- A member of the department's CIC will serve as a proxy diversity advocate on every search committee for faculty hires beginning Spring 2021.
