NEW Spring 2024 - Semiconductor Processing & Manufacturing Technologies Certificate

New in spring 2024!

The Undergraduate Embedded Certificate in Semiconductor Processing and Manufacturing Technologies rounds out the student’s main major curriculum with curated interdisciplinary courses that will better prepare them for entry into the semiconductor manufacturing workforce.

This certificate especially compliments undergraduate curricula offered in engineering, math, and other physical sciences by adding competency in semiconductor processing and fabrication methods along with corresponding technologies. All students admitted to Ohio State are eligible to enroll.

Program format

Delivery of program are primarly in-person and includes a laboratory component.

Competency upon completion of the Certificate of Semiconductor Processing & Manufacturing Technologies includes:

  •  understanding the fundamentals of semiconductors and semiconductor device physics
  • understanding the basic multidisciplinary science and engineering concepts employed in semiconductor materials processing and device fabrication
  • application of the above concepts toward the development, troubleshooting, and/or optimization of semiconductor processes, such as those encountered within semiconductor research and manufacturing environments.

Requirements to complete the certification program

  1. A minimum GPA of 2.0 in the certificate courses is required for completion.
  2. Completion of the certificate requires a minimum of 13 credit hours.
  3. Full overlap with major coursework.

There are three sets of required courses (10 hours)

Set one: Semiconductor Fundamentals

ECE 3030 Semiconductor Electronic Devices (3 credits) or MATSCEN 3271 Electronic Properties (3 credits)

Set two: Thermodynamics or Probability and Statistics Fundamentals

This set is divided into two categories considering most STEM students will receive adequate background within their major of one of these categories, but usually not both.

Set three: Semiconductor Processing / Cleanroom Lab

The third set ensures students have experiential training and is only offered in ECE 5037 Solid State Electronics and Photonics Laboratory (4 credits).
