Research and areas of expertise

The majority of her work focuses on biomaterials and tissue engineering. Her lab studies skin specifically, thus we are interested in developing technologies that can help heal large burn injuries (pediatric and adults), reduce scarring post injury and improve the quality of life for these patients. We also work on bone regeneration to replace diseased or damaged limbs.

Approach to supporting and improving diversity and inclusion

"My approach to mentoring anyone is to listen to a student's needs and try to understand their perspective. I am on the Department's Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach Committee as well as the College's Inclusive Excellence Council. The biggest things those roles have taught me is that everyone's experience is difference and open dialog about those differences (both good and bad) helps everyone to approach learning with greater compassion."

What you might not know about Professor Powell

"I really enjoy being outdoors and specifically like to hike and travel. I also like to build things in my spare time (furniture etc.). I was also the first person in my immediate family to graduate from university."
