Welding Engineering 4189

What you need to know for WELDENG 4189
Practical Experience in a Welding Organization

Course Information: Experience in an industrial engineering organization and the submission of an acceptable report on the work done. 1 credit hour. Prerequisite: WE 4002 and WE 4202.

This is a required credit for BSWE majors.

Graduating seniors must register for WE 4189 at least one semester before their graduating semester. The course can be added only with permission, so please contact Megan to add it to your schedule.

Expectations

As noted in the course description, the expectation is that you will be involved in a welding engineering-related job experience. There is some flexibility as to the nature of the work but ideally, it will be related to welding processes, materials, design and/or nondestructive evaluation. Should you be concerned about the suitability of the proposed job, discuss it with Prof. Farson before making a final decision.

There is one meeting in the first week of classes. The intent of this course is to give credit for the required practical experience in the welding industry via an internship, co-op, or other work situation. Reporting on the work experience will be done on a survey sheet and a written report that addresses specific learning outcomes. The work experience can be obtained on a full-time basis for one semester (usually Summer) or on a part time basis for two or more semesters. Each work experience should include approximately 40 hours per week for ten weeks or 400 hours. Employment at the university is acceptable under special circumstances. The instructor must determine the acceptability of any job regarding its use as a basis for a WE 4189 report.

Job Procurement

1. Start early: Six months in advance is considered appropriate. However, if you are aiming toward a place requiring a security clearance, an even earlier start is suggested.

2. Be prepared for drug testing: for safety and liability purposes many companies will require a urine or hair sample from you before making a final offer.

3. Resume preparation and Job leads:

Engineering-Specific Career Fairs –Expo in Autumn and SWE Career Fair in Spring

Company Information Sessions: Companies regularly request time to present information about themselves to the students. You should receive email about these visits. Also check bulletin boards at the EJTC. Often the visits are followed up with resume collection and next-day interviews scheduled at ECS.

Carmen site for Welding Engineering Undergrads – Megan posts job openings she hears about from alumni and friends of WE. Most of these also will be listed with ECS.

The WE Faculty: Work with Prof. Farson, your Faculty Advisor, and any and all the faculty to obtain or develop job leads.

The WE Bulletin Boards in EJTC: As information comes into the department on new job openings, this will be posted.  This information may also be emailed to you when possible.

Your own ingenuity and contacts:  Students often make useful contacts at the annual FABTECH (AWS) national meeting in November. Seek assistance from relatives, friends, and alumni.

4. This is a short-time job experience, not your entire future career in welding. Therefore, do not blanket dozens of companies with needless paperwork, or start playing one company against another on job offers. Do not be overly-choosy, as long as the job meets WE 4189 requirements and your financial needs.

5. Report your offer to ECS: Not only does this help keep accurate placement and salary data, but it also helps us keep a record of positive and negative student experiences.

6. You represent OSU and the department as well as yourself in these endeavors. Be professional in your written and oral communications with the company. The future of OSU welding engineers, for both permanent and other employment, will be influenced by your work.
