Ramirez, Antonio

Biography

Professor Antonio J. Ramirez joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2015. He teaches welding metallurgy and additive manufacturing for the department's welding engineering program. Dr. Ramirez is also the director of the Manufacturing and Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC), which is the U.S. largest Industry-University Cooperative Research center co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Faculty mentor

Professor Ramirez also serves as a faculty mentor, a voluntary position that helps shape student growth by engaging in active listening and offering sound advice. Faculty mentors are part of the department's Climate and Inclusivity initiatives. His diverse personal and professional background support a philosophy that the more diverse a team, the more success they reap.

Education

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering, National University of Colombia, 1993
  • M.S. Materials Science and Engineering, Sao Paulo University (Brazil), 1997
  • Ph.D. Materials Science and Engineering, Sao Paula University, 2001

After working as postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at Ohio State from 2001-2003, Ramirez continued his scientific career at the Synchrotron Light National Laboratory (LNLS) and Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano) in Brazil (2004-2015) as a researcher, group leader, industrial research director and LNNano deputy-director.

Honors and Awards

2022 - Ma2JIC awarded inaugural NSF START grant

2022 - recognized by Elsevier as among the top 2% scientists in the world

2021 - Named a fellow of IAspire Leadership Academy

2017 - NASA grant to advance additive manufacturing

Expertise

His research ranges from the joining of structural materials to exploring fundamental aspects of bulk and nanostructured materials down to the atomic scale.  He works with the technological and fundamental aspects of welding and additive manufacturing metallurgy, weldability, printability, and has vast experience in materials modeling and characterization. Dr. Ramirez was ranked in the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Elsevier in 2021.

In recent years, he has focused on the study of advanced steels, stainless steels and Ni-based alloys fusion welding, additive manufacturing, solid state joining (friction stir welding), and the development and application of advanced in-situ techniques associated with electron microscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction to unveil the fundamentals of phase transformations on structural and functional materials.

Dr. Ramirez is currently engaged in the development of fast-acting ICME-based solutions for the automotive and aerospace industries that allow process and materials modeling for the optimization of complex multi-materials joining and additive manufacturing operations.
