The Ohio State University is always well represented at the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition. This year it was held in San Diego from March 19 to 23, and four notable Buckeyes received awards at the TMS-AIME Awards Ceremony on March 22.

Awards are given at the Society and Division level, as well as in young professional and student categories, recognizing a variety of accomplishments by scientists and engineers in all phases of their careers. The highest honor that the Society can bestow is the TMS Fellow Award.1

Peter Anderson, Ohio State Materials Science and Engineering
Anderson

Peter Anderson

Professor Peter Anderson received the Julia & Johannes Weertman Educator Award for outstanding contributions to education in metallurgical engineering and/or materials science and engineering. He has been a materials science and engineering professor at The Ohio State University since 1988 and is the director of Anderson Materials Group, which studies the structure of various materials controls their mechanical properties.

The Julia & Johannes Weertman Educator Award award is made possible by the TMS Foundation through an endowment by colleagues and friends of Julia and Hans Weertman, as well as the department of materials science and engineering and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Northwestern University.

Locke

Jenifer Locke

Professor Jenifer Locke received the Frank Crossley Diversity Award, which represents victory over personal, professional, educational, cultural, or institutional adversity while establishing a career in minerals, metals, and/or materials. In an earlier announcement by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Locke is described as a long-time supporter of creating welcoming and unbiased environments. She encourages everyone to listen with open minds, believe others' truths and welcome difference to help eliminate implicit bias. Through application, she sees her equation enabling every person to reach their potential unhindered by the mental load caused by bias. While at Ohio State, Dr. Locke is devoted to creating more equitable learning environments. Locke has been a materials science and engineering professor at Ohio State since 2015 and performs research in corrosion and environment-assisted cracking.

The Frank Crossley Diversity Award is made possible by the generosity of Jeffery Wadsworth and Geraldine McCulley Wadsworth.

Professor Alan Luo

Alan Luo

Professor Alan Luo was inducted into the 2023 TMS Class of Fellows.

Luo also received the 2023 Research to Industrial Practice Award for outstanding research and practical contributions to light metals technology and industrial applications. In an earlier announcement by the department, Luo stated, "As a materials scientist and engineer, I have always believed that the best scientific research should lead to real-world applications."

He is the FEF Key Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Integrated Systems Engineering. Luo is also the director of both Lightweight Materials and Manufacturing Research Laboratory and the Advanced Casting Research Center at Ohio State. Luo has been a professor at Ohio State since 2013. His research focus is lightweight materials, advanced and sustainable manufacturing process, and integrated computational materials engineering.
