Kaue Riffel Ohio State visiting scholar

Kaue Riffel is a Buckeye in Brazil thanks to the Brazil Gateway. He was a visiting scholar with the College of Engineering in 2021. His reflection was recently shared by Ohio State's Office of International Affairs.

I am a mechanical engineer and graduate student doing my PhD in welding technology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil. I always wanted to develop part of my graduate education in the United States, carrying out cutting-edge research and making connections overseas.

Ohio State was a fundamental step in my goal. Ohio State’s welding lab – Edison Joining Technology Center – stands out as one of the most recognized welding laboratories worldwide, where I spent one year working with several different activities and projects besides my own research.

It was one of the best years of my life in terms of professional and personal learning. I had the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world in my field, exchanging scientifically acquired knowledge. Moreover, in my daily routine, I also made a lot of new friends out of my job with whom I still keep in contact.

Ohio State’s campus is amazing, and the weather in Columbus was different from everything I have ever seen before. By the way, it was the first time I saw snow. I highly recommend Ohio State for those who are interested in a high-quality university.
