On March 11, 2022, Professor Michael J. Mills received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Ruhr-University Bochum. He received this prestigious honor for his research accomplishments and long-standing technical interactions with the Materials Research Department (MRD) at Ruhr University.

The degree has the formal title Dr.-Ing. honoris causa and was presented by Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr.-Ing. Marcus Petermann, in the company of President (Rektor) Martin Paul, Professor Gunther Eggeler and the faculty and graduate students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mills' research is largely focused on the relationship between microstructure and structural properties of materials, providing a better understanding of mechanical behavior of a wide variety of metallurgical systems through determination of deformation mechanisms via advanced electron microscopy characterization methods.

Dr. Mills is the Taine G. McDougal Professor and was appointed chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Ohio State in 2019. He has been a professor at Ohio State since 1994 and has long been recognized for his research collaborations with Germany. Mills received the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellowship in 1995 and the AvH Award for Research in 2018. Mills was awarded the Heyn Memorial Medal from the German Materials Society in 2021 for his contributions to the field of materials science and engineering and his promotion of scientific relations between the U.S. and Germany. He was a visiting professor at Ruhr-University Bochum in 2010.

Michael has authored over 220 journal articles throughout his career, he has advised 30 Ph.D. students and nine Masters students and is one of only 70 TMS Fellows in the U.S. He received his B.S. from San Jose State University and M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
