The Department of Materials Science and Engineering congratulates MSE doctoral student Menglin Zhu for being awarded a 2022 Presidential Fellowship by the Graduate School.

Many intriguing macroscopic phenomena in science are explained based on theoretical hypotheses yet not thoroughly understood. Menglin's passion is to understand science from a micro perspective. Electron microscopy allows him to solve scientific puzzles by observing the fundamental components of an object - the atom.

Menglin's dissertation research focuses on the study of emergent phenomena, including thermal, electronic and magnetic properties at semiconductor interfaces using high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. His advisor is Professor Jinwoo Hwang.

"It is encouraging that my efforts are recognized. It’s also a great motivation for me to continue exploring materials science. I am also very grateful for my PI as well as all the collaborators with whom I have the privilege to work."

Presidential Fellowship

Presidential Fellowship gives fellows one year, three consecutive semesters, of full-time financial support. This support is provided so fellows can complete their dissertations or terminal degree projects and to graduate unimpeded by other duties.
