Dr. Elvin Beach, The Ohio State University, has been named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention (JFAP). Dr. Beach succeeds Dr. Michael
Stevenson, who served as Editor-in-Chief from 2011 until his sudden and unexpected passing in March of this year.

Dr. Beach joined the JFAP editorial team as Deputy Editor for the journal in mid-2020. Prior to that he was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance since 2014. He has been as Associate Editor for Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis since 2013, and continues in that position.

Dr. Beach is Associate Professor of Practice in Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University. He received his B.S. in metallurgical engineering and M.S. in materials science and engineering from Michigan Technological University and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Beach’s educational and professional experiences have provided a broad background in materials science and engineering. He began as an undergraduate research assistant working on surface chemistry and atomic force microscopy. His internship while at Michigan Tech was at IBM where he developed advanced lead-free solder joints.
When he returned to complete his M.S. degree, this research involved surface modification to minimize drug particle adhesion to packaging surfaces. At Dow Chemical Company, he worked in the surface, x-ray, and microscopy group supporting electronic materials development, early OLED development work, and failure analysis.

While pursuing his Ph.D. at Ohio State, Dr. Beach’s research was specific to developing ceramic microsensors using ink-jet deposition. This work involved chemical synthesis, microelectronic substrate fabrication for device miniaturization, and sensor array testing in partnership with NIST. After graduation, he worked at Owens Corning developing coatings for roofing that prevented algae and other microorganisms from forming. Dr. Beach moved to Battelle Memorial Institute doing contract research and development which allowed him to focus on failure analysis and materials selection work with both government and industrial customers.

Dr. Beach then took a position at Worthington Industries leading the research and development team in the Materials Lab. This involved significant work in failure analysis for customers, rapid manufacturing process troubleshooting, developing new joining methods (e.g. high speed friction stir welding), and creating a hot stamping simulation system for press hardenable steels.

At Ohio State, Dr. Beach leads new initiatives in laboratory instruction, training teaching assistants who can support teaching of the labs, developing and implementing hands-on testing and characterization of materials, and coordinating undergraduate student employees to support the educational programs of the department. Maintaining scholarships in engineering education and outreach activities are also part of his role, in addition to overseeing the development and teaching of undergraduate course content. He enjoys creating laboratory-based class experiences that reinforce fundamental concepts learned in core classes and providing context for how these will translate to practice in industry.

Dr. Beach, along with co-authors Tom Luzanski, Dustin Marshall, and Brian Dix, won the 2017 Jacquet-Lucas Award for Excellence in Metallography with the entry ‘‘Classic Aluminum Etch Supporting Development of a New Automotive Joining Process’’ (Class 1).
