The Department of Materials Science and Engineering congratulates doctoral student Thomas Avey for winning the best oral presentation award at the 12th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and their Applications (Mg 2021)

Thomas's presentation was on phase focused alloy design of Mg alloys for use in metallic bio-absorbable medical devices. By using the CALPHAD (CALculation of Phase Diagrams) method, microcell corrosion testing, and macroscale immersion tests, he showed preliminary results on specific phases to target/avoid to improve the alloy’s corrosion resistance.

I’m incredibly humbled to receive this award. The many excellent talks and discussions sparked new ideas and will improve my work going forward. I am very thankful for the help and insight Dr. Luo and members of the Lightweight Materials and Manufacturing Research Lab provided while constructing this talk.

Thomas Avey will be graduating from Ohio State with his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering in spring 2023 and plans to move into industrial research on magnesium alloys after graduation.

About the conference

tms.org/mg2021

The Conference on Magnesium Alloys and their Applications (Mg 2021) hosts the global research community for exploring the latest discoveries in magnesium, both fundamental and applied. First held in 1986 in London, this event is the longest running conference dedicated to the development of magnesium alloys.

The conference covers the full breadth of magnesium research and development, from primary production to applications to end-of-life management. Scientists and engineers from academia, government, and industry discuss new developments in magnesium alloys and share valuable insights.
