Jacque Berkson, WE senior, awarded at Denman Research Forum
The 26th annual Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum was held the week of April 5. Five students represented the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at this year's virtual event.
Jacque Berkson is a senior welding engineering major and member of the undergraduate research distinction program. Mr. Berkson was awarded first place in the Engineering: Physical Sciences category with his presentation, "Effects of Binary Argon-Shielding Gas Mixture on Ultra-thin Features Produced by Laser-Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing".
His research focused on the effects of implementing a binary argon-helium gas mixture within the Laser-Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing process, with emphasis on the production of ultra-thin features. Existing at the intersection of process and metallurgy, his studies associated with this work drew heavily on the welding engineering curriculum, as well as his experiences as an undergraduate research assistant over the past two years.
It is truly an honor to be recognized among my peers who presented excellent work at the Denman Research Forum, and I am grateful for the opportunity to advance my project reporting experience. I would also like to sincerely thank my advisor Dr. Antonio Ramirez for his guidance, as well as the unique opportunity to interact with the advanced manufacturing technology housed within the AM laboratory at EJTC.
Upon graduation this spring, Berkson will continue studying in pursuit of a doctorate degree in welding engineering.
Congratulations to Jacque Berkson and Dr. Antonio Ramirez for their award-winning research!
