Binbin Wang entered the doctoral program at Ohio State in 2017 and has been studying materials science and engineering under the direction of Dr. David W. McComb.

Wang was initially attracted to materials science and engineering by emergent phenomena in condensed matter physics, which led him to Professor McComb and the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis at Ohio State which hosts the largest collection of electron and ion beam analytical microscopy instruments of any North American institution.1 His research now focuses on topology in magnetic materials using advanced electron microscopes.

“The presidential scholarship will enable me to focus on my dissertation research, which uses electron microscopy to explore advanced magnetic properties and its applications in spintronics. The scholarship also encourages me to continue to engage in scientific research to elevate my knowledge and advance the field of electron microscopy.”

Materials science and engineering professor and CEMAS director David McComb commends Wang’s research efforts and contributions, “Binbin is a highly talented young scientist who is combining both theory and experiment in the field of spintronics and topological materials. He brings energy, enthusiasm and determination to every project and has developed into an excellent collaborator in a team environment. The award of a Presidential Fellowship will allow him to take a larger step towards a promising academic career.”

Before joining Ohio State, the China native earned his bachelor’s degree in applied physics from Nanjing University of AA in 2014 and a Master’s degree in physics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2017. Mr. Wang will be graduating from Ohio State with his PhD in materials science and engineering in summer 2022.

Binbin Wang plans on being a research scholar or professor, discovering alternative physics in spintronics and new characterization techniques using electron microscopes.

Jianxiong Li, a doctoral student in the department's welding engineering program, was also awarded a Presidential Fellowship by the Graduate School in spring 2021.
