The Department of Materials Science and Engineering congratulates each student who graduated on Sunday, December 13. The final road to autumn 2020 commencement presented hurdles overcome with ambition, will and fortitude by some 4,000 Buckeyes. As they embark on the next phase of their lives, we continue to honor them for earning their degrees and welcome them to the world’s greatest alumni society.

A milestone was met, and a dream was realized. Angshuman Kapil's dream continues to become reality as he prepares to move to Belgium in January. He has always been fascinated with traveling. Spending the summer of 2019 in Germany as a research intern with Technische Universität (TU) Dortmund confirmed his love of travel and the option to combine it with a career. Learning about different cultures has always been part of his life. The Indian native came to The Ohio State University in January 2016 to pursue his doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering.

Mars G. Fontana Professor Glenn Daehn, a 33-year veteran of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is a household name in the metals joining industry. Kapil learned about Dr. Daehn’s novel welding technique while earning his Master of Science degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (2015). “I was really intrigued by how we could engineer the technique by understanding the materials aspects at the microscopic level.” Angshuman relocated to Columbus the next year to pursue his doctoral studies in Materials Science and Engineering with Daehn as his advisor.

Dr. Kapil was a key member of Daehn’s research group, the Impulse Manufacturing Laboratory, as he focused on practical applications of Professor Daehn’s signature welding technique in the automotive industry. The addition of materials science to his two degrees in mechanical engineering allowed him greater opportunities to understand materials manufacturing and performance.

He presented his thesis, Aspects of Vaporizing Foil Actuator Welding for Practical Automotive Applications, on November 12 and has since accepted a position as a postdoctoral fellow with the Department of Materials Engineering at KU Leuven. Dr. Angshuman will concentrate on welding-based additive manufacturing in his new position.

The Buckeye community has come to appreciate Angshuman’s affinity for travel. He is a skilled photographer whose adventures are expertly memorialized in digital form. He won the Office of International Affairs’ annual International Photography Competition in 2019. Kapil promises to appease his virtual, Ohio-based passengers on social media as he immerses himself in Belgian culture, “Moving to Belgium provides me with another opportunity to experience something that varies greatly from what I have experienced in my native country and in the United States. I am equally excited about indulging in Belgian waffles and chocolates.”

Kapil was a respectable researcher with the Impulse Manufacturing Laboratory and is highly regarded by industry partners, like Ford, for his contributions to the advancement of automotive manufacturing. He embodies Ohio State excellence and will surely share his gifts with his colleagues at KU Leuven. “The past five years at Ohio State have been wonderful. I will miss being part of such a prestigious institute. I will miss the beautiful and vibrant campus, the wonderful facilities it provides - both academic and recreational - and the friends I made along the way.” How firm they friendship.

Angshuman Kapil graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Gauhati University (BS, 2012) and went on to complete a MS in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in manufacturing engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (MS, 2015).
