Research and creative expression innovators have made their mark over the last 150 years by taking on the world’s issues as their direct challenges. Through this site, we will recognize many of those Ohio State innovators, and reflect on the university’s ongoing commitment to the discovery and application of knowledge. Decade: 2000s
Innovation: more economical CO2 capture membrane.

Mars-Fontana 150 innovators

Mars G. Fontana

Former professor of Metallurgical Engineering and department chairman and director of the Corrosion Center.
Decade: 1970s
Innovation: While others were developing the science of corrosion, he applied this basic knowledge to solve critical industry and infrastructure problems. Fontana wrote an important textbook on corrosion, was a revered lecturer, and an esteemed leader who was instrumental in creating new laboratories and recruiting faculty.

Edward Orton

The first president of The Ohio State University and economic geologist.
Decade: 1880s
Innovation: “Anticlinal theory,” the idea that oil and gas deposits most likely move to the highest elevations of permeable stone. His theory has been used ever since to predict the most favorable locations for oil and gas drilling
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering originated in the formation of the Department of Geology, Mining and Metallurgy in 1873.
