Student Excellence underscores the theme of our Spring edition of Watts News. The seven stories in this edition highlight the quality and passion of our undergraduate and graduate students and the ever-expanding range of experiences for Buckeye materials science and welding engineers.

This trend is complemented by an increase in the diversity of backgrounds, race, ethnicity and gender of our students. Diversity unequivocally fosters learning, discovery, and innovation. Our annual research expenditures of over $18 million fuel our academics by bringing state-of-the-art equipment and experiences into the academic enterprise.

For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow highlights NSF Graduate Fellow recipient Maria Stang and her efforts to develop oxygen-sensing nanofibers for potential use in brain tumor detection. Improving Safety One Step at a Time describes junior Akshara Sreedhar’s efforts at Ohio State's Injury Biomechanics Research Center to simulate a frontal impact vehicle collision and the consequences for bending and potentially fracturing ribs. Lightening Up showcases senior Brett Worrell’s efforts to reduce vehicle weight and increase fuel efficiency by joining high-strength aluminum alloys.

Leading SWE describes junior Kelsey Riffle’s new leadership in the Society of Women Engineers and her interest in high-strength steels for reduced vehicle weight. Reaching Out highlights senior Joan Lee’s efforts to inspire middle school students to pursue a career in engineering and her own path to success.

When the Dissimilar Meet describes graduate student Genevieve Lee’s efforts to characterize Ni-steel and Al-steel welds using state-of-the-art characterization facilities at CEMAS. Teaching Excellence highlights the selection of graduate students Mohammad Shahriar and Yan Lu as the 2016-17 Woolley Teaching Fellows.

I trust that you will be impressed with the variety, recognition, and dedication to discovery, outreach, and learning enterprise embodied in these stories.
