Betrabet to deliver Distinguished Alumnus Lecture Sept. 30

Hemant Betrabet, ’86, will trace “A Metallurgist’s Journey in Industrial Research and Development” for the 2016 Department of Materials Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Lecture at The Ohio State University. The lecture will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in 264 MacQuigg Labs, 105 West Woodruff Ave.

Hemant Betrabet,
A key turning point in Betrabet’s professional development came in the form of a textbook when he was pursuing a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology.

“My favorite course in the department was Corrosion Engineering, and our textbook was authored by Mars G. Fontana,” the world-renowned educator and engineer who spent 30 years at Ohio State as an educator, researcher, and leader of the Corrosion Center that bears his name.

“My interest in corrosion, coupled with my interest in my father’s experience in electron microscopy led me to apply to Ohio State for graduate studies,” Betrabet said.

Betrabet is Senior Director for Research and Development, Science and Technology, at S.C. Johnson in Racine, Wisconsin.

“In my role, I am the bridge between technical leaders, business leaders and consumers,” he said. “I like to say my team puts science to work, meaning our experiments and technical breakthroughs don’t sit in a laboratory and remain in reports, but are actionable and applicable to truly create meaningful solutions for consumers and positively impact their lives.”

From his days as a Ph.D. student at Ohio State, to postdoctoral research at IBM, and in the consumer electronics and consumer products industries, Betrabet will share the best (and worst) advice he’s received along the way.

The Distinguished Alumnus Lecture was established in 1984 to honor a graduate of the Department who has made significant contributions to the field of materials science and engineering. The lecture is free and open to the public.
