Wei Zhang, Associate Professor of Welding Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University, will receive one of his field’s top teaching honors when he accepts the American Welding Society’s (AWS) Adams Memorial Membership Award.

The award is given as a way to recognize educators whose teaching activities have advanced the knowledge of welding at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Wei will be recognized at a luncheon at AWS’s FABTECH event in November in Las Vegas.

Zhang joined the welding engineering faculty at Ohio State in January 2013. He’s also a core faculty member for the Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center at Ohio State. Prior to joining the University, he worked as a senior researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and as an engineer team leader at the Edison Welding Institute.

“What I enjoy the most about teaching welding engineering is to see that the students apply what they have learned in the class to their capstone projects and graduate research, Zhang said.”

At FABTECH, he’ll speak on “Empowering Students with Computational Modeling Tools for Welding Design and Analysis” at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.

His research interests are focused on integrated computational materials engineering for welding and additive manufacturing, material constitutive behavior under extreme deformation and temperature conditions, and neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction of phase transformations.

Headquartered in Miami, AWS serves over 70,000 members worldwide and is dedicated to supporting hundreds of thousands of industry professionals, including welders, business leaders, sales and service teams, manufacturers, vendors, associations, educational institutions, committee volunteers, and students.

FABTECH is North America’s largest metal forming, fabricating, welding, and finishing event. This year’s event is expected to welcome over 28,000 attendees and 1,300 exhibiting companies to see the latest industry products and developments and discover new solutions to metal forming, fabricating, welding, and finishing challenges.
