Research Topics
Development of new semiconductor materials with properties exceeding that of conventional silicon-based devices is essential for advancing novel electronic, quantum, and optical devices with faster speed and high energy efficiency. Many of the important properties of these novel semiconductors are dictated by the defects within the structure. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy, we investigate the detailed structure and types of point defects and their complexes, as well as various types of extended defects to understand their impact to the properties of these semiconductors. One of the systems that we study is gallium oxide with a wide band gap of 4.8 eV and high breakdown voltage, which is a prime candidate for the next generation power device applications. This project is supported by Air Force Office of Research MURI program.
The development of novel magnetic systems enabling fast, efficient control of magnetic states is essential to advancing next-generation spin-electronics. This project (NSF-MRSEC) is exploring a highly promising approach utilizing little-explored magnetic structures founded on insulating magnets and innovative means of controlling spins. The multidisciplinary team establishes a new regime for the creation and understanding of novel static/dynamic magnetic phases and multipronged control of the magnetic states in interface-driven metal/magnetic insulator systems. Disordered atomic configurations in amorphous and glassy materials may result in unique properties that cannot be achieved in crystalline-based materials. We seek to understand the detailed structures of various types of amorphous materials and glasses and how they determine their important properties to advance them in novel functional and energy applications. We currently focus on understanding the deformation behavior of metallic glasses (supported by NSF), optimizing properties of amorphous materials for renewable energy (supported by Department of Energy), and organic semiconductors.
Thermal transport in nanoscale systems can be greatly influenced by structural heterogeneity in the material, including interfaces and defects. We aim to understand the factors that critically influence the thermal transport in nanomaterials by advancing scanning transmission electron microscopy to directly determine the temperature of materials at the atomic to nanometer scale. This project is supported by NSF CAREER program.
