This event includes lunch and presentations from student interns from Columbus State Community College who participated in the inaugural Skills Training in Advanced Research & Technology (START) program made possible by the National Science Foundation.

Weld-Ed and the Manufacturing and Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC) were awarded the inaugural Skills Training in Advanced Research & Technology (START) grant from the NSF to provide internships to five community college welding technician students and two community/technical college faculty during the 2021-2022 academic year.

The immersive experience was hosted by The Ohio State University and included hands-on learning using cutting edge technology, interaction with graduate students enrolled in Ohio State’s welding engineering program, and instruction from faculty at Ma2JIC universities - Colorado School of Mines, University of Tennessee Knoxville, University of Waterloo, and Pennsylvania State University.

Weld-Ed is a national consortium of over 500 welding industry affiliates, community and technical colleges, and universities dedicated to expanding the role and number of well-educated and trained welding technicians in the industry. Lorain County Community College (LCCC) in Elyria, OH and the American Welding Society (AWS) serve as the leaders of the consortium.

Ma2JIC, an NSF-approved Industry and University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC), is the second largest IUCRC in the nation, with over 40 member companies specializing in power generation, oil & gas, automotive, and defense. Member companies work with students and faculty across the five university sites.

Three welding technician students from Columbus State Community College interned at Ohio State under the direction of welding engineering professors Boyd Panton, Boian Alexandrov, and Antonio Ramirez, Director of Ma2JIC. Instructors from Lorain County Community College and North Dakota State College of Science also participated and completed the inaugural training program.
