AWS Aerospace Joining Conference 2019

The American Welding Society is hosting its 2019 Aerospace Joining Conference in Columbus, OH. The event brings together experts from research and development, manufacuring and applications in the areas of advanced welding and brazing, additive manufacturing, single crystal repair and advanced repair technologies for the aerospace and IGT engine industries.

Glenn Daehn, Mars G. Fontana Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at The Ohio State University 

Glenn Daehn’s research, education and service efforts are all broadly related to the interwoven themes of Midwestern manufacturing revival, which in turn depends on technology development, integration of the University mission with regional industry and the development of a world-class workforce that is both smart and creative as well as able to make things.

Disruptive Opportunities in Light Structure Joining and Design

New approaches to design and manufacture can reduce aircraft weight and cost while improving durability. New technologies for solid state joining and component fabrication will be detailed including deployable methods of impact welding, conformal joining and metamorphic manufacturing. The key challenge will be in accepting and qualifying new practices. This is a challenge shared by other emerging technologies such as additive manufacturing.
