WE Colloquium: David Grewell, Interfacial Healing Model for Welding and Additive Manufacturing
This presentation reviews the fundamental principles underlying molecular diffusion in healing polymer interfaces and characterizes the activation energy of self-healing. These concepts are coupled with transient heating models to predict ultrasonic weld strength of sustainable materials. These models are then further developed to allow the prediction of part quality of FDM (fused deposition modeling) 3D printed parts. The presentation reviews the validation of these models as well as implications of adopting these principles in future 3D printing systems. The presentation will end with possible new laser beam spatial modulation and proposed models for selective laser sintering.
