The MSE Department will host a coffee and cookie reception in room 264 MacQuigg Labs from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. followed by Mr. Shirley's talk at 4:00.

Abstract

Review and discussion of Mark Shirley’s career spanning several companies in the heavy manufacturing sector highlighting career path, achievements, and challenges. Mark will also note where his Metallurgical Engineering degree from The Ohio State University contributed to professional success. Review of Finkl Steel products, manufacturing process, and organization demonstrating opportunities, career paths, and challenges for Material Science Engineers.  General overview of the Forging Industry Association (FIA), and the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation (FIERF). Summary of opportunities for research grants and scholarships with FIERF, as well as R&D opportunities with Finkl Steel.

Mark Shirley, MSE 2017 Distinguished Alumni

Mark Shirley is CEO of Finkl Steel, a position he has held since 2014.  He also currently serves as President of the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation (FIERF), and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Forging Industry Association (FIA). Prior to Finkl Steel, Mark spent 4 years at Griffin Pipe Products as President, and 22 years at Amsted Rail Company in a variety of leadership positions including Chief Operating Officer-Wheels & Bearings, President-Griffin Wheel, Vice President of Manufacturing-Griffin Wheel as well as a variety of positions in manufacturing, engineering and sales and marketing.  Mark has a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from The Ohio State University and an MBA from DePaul University.  Mark and his wife, Lisa, and their three children reside in Barrington, Illinois.
