Abstract

Duplex stainless steels combine high strength with good corrosion resistance and are increasingly replacing conventional austenitic steels in various applications in industries such as chemical processing, oil & gas, pulp & paper and desalination. When the “lean” duplex stainless steels were introduced to the market more than a decade ago, there was a great need for suitable welding recommendations. These grades have made it easier to control the austenite/ferrite balance to some extent allowed for applications where welding can be carried out autogenously. Some examples include continuous longitudinal welding in tube mills and fabrication of domestic water heaters using the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), plasma arc welding (PAW) and laser beam welding (LBW) processes. This presentation summarizes some of the industry-driven research at Outokumpu Stainless and voestalpine Böhler Welding aimed at optimizing the properties of duplex weldments and to explain observed phenomena.
