Abstract

Low-cost, long-life energy storage remains an unsolved problem for future grid and vehicle applications. This talk describes an asymmetric energy storage system based upon sodium, rather than lithium active ions. Long-term performance and capability of this system as a possible grid-storage solution is discussed. Furthermore, the need for adaptive energy storage controls, sensors and modeling will be included in the discussion. The development of a program that funds radical new approaches to enhance battery performance while seeking to reduce long-term system costs will be presented. Finally, technology needed to address the Energy-Water Nexus will be discussed.
