Abstract:

The fact that welding is a complex engineering discipline involving aspects of materials science, transport phenomena and processing makes Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) an especially powerful tool for solving welding challenges.  This talk discusses several exemplary applications of ICME in welding.  The first example presents mitigation of cracking in laser welded pacemaker components through thermal-stress analysis.  The second example highlights the effect of high temperature microstructure-mechanics interaction on weld residual stresses in nuclear reactor welds.  The last example discusses heat transfer and mass flow modeling of a friction stir welded magnesium alloy.  Model validation using advanced measurement techniques is also discussed.
