The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University (https://mse.osu.edu) invites applications for a regular tenure-track faculty appointment in the area of biomaterials synthesis and processing. This position is partially funded by The Ohio State University Discovery Themes, a significant investment in key thematic areas in which the university will make an impact. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to contribute to the Focus Area of Chronic Brain Injury, an interdisciplinary effort centered on the development of methods for detecting the presence and extent of brain injuries and other chronic neurodegenerative diseases, and on the creation of new and improved imaging techniques. Appointment is anticipated at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor; tenure will be possible based on experience, research track record and technical accomplishments. Appointment at the rank of Professor will also be considered when warranted. Biomaterials research has many application areas at The Ohio State University, and the successful applicant will be expected to deepen and complement existing departmental activities in sensor or implant modification, tissue engineering and surface characterization while also supporting a strong teaching program in the area. Of particular interest are candidates with strengths in synthesis of micro- or nanoscale components having directed functionality appropriate to addressing a range of challenges within Medicine. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain active sponsored research programs, teach core undergraduate and/or graduate courses and be an active participant in the international biomaterials science community. Applicants are expected to engage in multi-disciplinary work involving materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical and biomolecular engineering, biomedical engineering, and medicine.
Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in materials science and engineering or in a closely related field. Research leadership is expected including the ability to attract significant federal funding and industrial partnerships to sustain a vibrant research program. Additionally, the candidate should have evidence of being able to work cooperatively and collegially to advance research and teaching programs with greatest efficiency and highest impact. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2019.
