Ceramic Engineering

Description: The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University seeks an outstanding scholar for the Edward Orton Jr. Chair in Ceramic Engineering. Appointment at the senior level will be made. Applicants in all areas of ceramics research, including advanced ceramic and ceramic matrix composites for structural, energy, and functional applications in extreme environments, are welcome.  Focus areas of interest include processing, property measurement, and microstructure-based modeling of ceramic and ceramic-matrix composite materials. Ceramic materials research has a long tradition at Ohio State, with strong ties to the Orton Ceramic Foundation, Honda, and other industrial partners. The candidate is expected to synergize and coordinate these activities and develop a robust research portfolio. The position is partially funded by the Ohio State Discovery Themes, a significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global impact.

Qualifications: We seek individuals who are ardent discoverers and passionate teachers and mentors, with demonstrated records of scholarship, collaboration, and evidence or promise for interdisciplinary leadership in an academic and/or R&D environment. Candidates must have an exceptional record of research accomplishment, strong evidence or promise for outstanding mentorship and teaching, and a clear potential for future contributions and leadership. A doctoral degree in materials science and engineering or in a related field appropriate to the scope of the position of interest is required. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain active sponsored research programs, teach core undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and develop new graduate courses related to their research expertise. Candidates should have experience or interest in working within interdisciplinary research teams and be committed to supporting the departmental mission of diversity and inclusion. The anticipated start date is August 2017. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
