MS based on completion of Candidacy, MSE

MS non-thesis graduation procedures for Master's of Science degree based on completion of the Materials Science and Engineering Candidacy Examination

In the term following successful completion of the Candidacy Examination a student may apply to receive a Master's Non-Thesis degree. This is optional, but serves as a nice "mile-marker" along the way to PhD.

Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of the Materials Science and Engineering Candidacy Exam in prior term
  2. Enroll in at least three graduate credits in term of application for the MS
  3. Completion of graded graduate credit hour requirements for the MATSCEN MS Non-Thesis degree
  4. Submit an MSE-WE Graduation Review Request form (as described on the previous page)
  5. Submit an Application to Graduate on GradForms by the third Tuesday of the term (this allows the advisor and MSE GSC Chair to post approval by the third Friday of the term)

When completing the Application to Graduate
    A)
Select the option for Graduation Level “Master’s-Candidacy Exam”. Any other selection will require you to take another exam and you don't want to do that!
    B) List all Candidacy Exam committee members. Faculty service on examination committees is tracked and is part of their advancement at the university.

That's it!

The approved Application to Graduate--and satisfactory completion of the Candidacy Exam and MS graded grad course credits--qualify the student to receive the MS non-Thesis degree.

IMPORTANT: If the Candidacy Exam has been completed, but the student will not continue in the PhD program (i.e., the MS non-Thesis will be your terminal degree) please contact the MSE-WE Graduate Studies Coordinator immediately.
