Apply to the Major
Apply to the Materials Science and Engineering major
Students who have been admitted to Ohio State indicating Materials Science and Engineering as their area of interest will be enrolled as a Pre-MATSCEN students in the College of Engineering.
Admission to the MSE major occurs only in the Spring semester, usually at the end of the sophomore year.
Students must apply to the MSE major by November 1, prior to that Spring.
Admission to the MSE major is competitive, based on the number of applicants. Students with a 2.75 cumulative GPA and 2.75 in the EPHR courses (see below) are guaranteed admission to the major.
Courses used to determine EPHR (Eligibility Point Hour Ratio)
Admission to the MSE major requires completion of the following courses or their equivalents before the major begins:
CHEM 1250 or 1210
ENGR 1181 and 1182
MATH 1151 and 1172
MATSCEN 2010 (must receive a grade of "C" or better)
ENGLISH 1110 must be completed, but is not included in the EPHR.
