GE-ACE New Students
Welcome and congratulations on your admission to The Ohio State University's Materials Science and Engineering department! We are excited about your arrival and wish to make your transition to graduate student life here at Ohio State as smooth as possible. The items below are listed in the general order they should be addressed, from first to last.
MSE faculty advisor The academic advisor for our GE-ACE students is Dr. Michael Mills. Dr. Mills has worked with many of our GE students and is familiar with the proprietary information restrictions often faced by our sudents. Other MSE faculty may serve as a GE student's advisor, but this may require approval by GE.
The first day of Autumn term 2019 is Tuesday, August 20.
Please make arrangements with GE to permit you sufficient time to move to Columbus and get settled before classes start. If arrival by the start of classes is impossible, please contact Mark Cooper immediately.
Prior to arrival, please schedule a department orientation with Mark Cooper, Graduate Studies Coordinator. Orientations are 20-30 minutes in length and overview important department and graduate studies matters.
By way of your OSU application account, please follow the "Accept/Decline" link to formally accept admission.
Activate your OSU internet account
Before arriving, please activate your OSU internet account. An e-mail/internet account is provided to all OSU students. The user name and password you establish for this account will permit on-line access to such things as course scheduling, grades, course web sites, and other important web-based resources provided by the university.
To activate your account, please go to the following web site:
- Click "Activate Now!" and follow the activation process. Associated with your application account should be an OSU user name in the form of "lastname.###" (such as "cooper.73")
- Be sure to note your OSU username and the password you established. These items will allow you to register for classes, check grades, etc.
Ohio Residency for Tuition Purposes (University Registrar)
GE students whose state of residency is Ohio will be billed at the in-state student rate. Information on how to establish / confirm Ohio residency will be found at the link above.
View housing information
It is strongly recommended that you secure housing, both temporary and long term, prior to your arrival on campus. For further information about the options available, please see the "Housing" page of the Newly Admitted Graduate Student section of our site.
Plan of study
GE-ACE students are to meet the MSE Master's Non-Thesis degree requirements. Before registering for classes, you must first discuss with your advisor which graded courses you should take and provide him/her with a basic plan of study detailing which courses will be taken to meet the degree requirements. A summary of required graded and non-graded credits, as well as how A & B Course credits apply to the degree, is provided here, GE-ACE MS non-thesis degree.
Health insurance--how to waive coverage
A minimum level of health insurance coverage is required of all students enrolled on-campus. By default, you will be enrolled in the OSU Student Health Insurance Plan. However, you may waive this coverage by proving sufficient minimum coverage under another provider. Please review the waiver procedures before registering for credits.
- Waiving coverage--procedures for domestic and international students to waive OSU coverage. This must be done by the 15th day of the term.
- The OSU Student Health Insurance policy coverage begins seven days before the first day of the term of enrollment.
- You will receive an insurance ID card and a booklet describing the Student Health Insurance policy's benefits.
For more detailed information about the policy call 1-800-254-2461, or visit the OSU Student Health Insurance Plan
Registering for Courses
The Admissions Office will provide new students with information on how to enroll and dates when enrollment windows will open. After determining with your advisor which courses you will take, students use the OSU Registrar's on-line registration system (BuckeyeLink) to enroll in classes--see "Course enrollment" page of the Newly Admitted Graduate Student section of our site for instructions. Graduate level courses are rarely closed, so it is unlikely that you will be shut out of a class.
Fee payment deadline: seven days prior to start of term
Fee Payment Deadlines (University Registrar)
Tuition and fees must be paid in full on or before one week prior to the start of a term. Failure to do so will result in assessment of late payment penalties.
All new MSE and WE students are to schedule an orientation session with Mark Cooper, MSE/WE Graduate Studies Coordinator. These orientations are held in room 5027 Smith Labs, 174 W. 18th Ave. between the hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday in the two weeks leading up to the start of the term. The session provides information about the MSE dept. and your graduate program, including:
- establishing a dept. account & dept. mailbox,
- health insurance & OSU ID card,
- enrolling in classes,
- other general information about the program
The Graduate School and the Council of Graduate Students will host a university-wide orientation for all new graduate students (i.e., Spring, Summer, and Autumn arrivals). This orientation will be held on the Monday before the start of Autumn term classes, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This orientation is a very valuable introduction to the services provided by the Graduate School, the Graduate Student Council, and various offices across campus. Please register for this event.-->
