March 2015 Chair Update

Dear MSE Family:

While the campus, along with the “Buckeye Nation” everywhere, is still basking in memories of the stirring National Championship run of the football team, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has its own exciting developments to share with this Spring edition of the Watts News.  The biggest faculty hiring initiative in the history of The Ohio State University – the “Discovery Theme Initiative” – is swinging into high gear across campus to strengthen OSU’s mission areas of teaching and learning, research and innovation, and outreach and engagement.

MSE is positioned to play significant roles in two distinct Discovery Theme focus areas of Materials for a Sustainable World and Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases, and we will keep you informed as these exciting developments unfold.   We have now welcomed Professor Antonio Ramirez who is internationally recognized in materials joining and characterization, adding a dynamic new presence to the Welding program and the Center for Integrative Materials Joining Science for Energy Applications.  The CIMJSEA continues to expand and thrive, with over 30 industry sponsors and is poised for continued growth.

On the academic front, we celebrated the extraordinary accomplishments of this year’s senior class for both MSE and Welding programs with a joint Students Awards night, which is one in a series of events (including of course the long-standing tradition of “Rib ‘N Roast”) that will culminate in Spring Graduation, which is now only a few months away!  MSE graduate students made their mark through their outstanding research contributions at this year’s Hayes Research Forum, while students and faculty will also be making broad technical impact at upcoming international conferences, including NACE Corrosion 2015 Meeting in Dallas and the TMS Annual Meeting in Orlando.

If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to reconnect with your OSU colleagues at these meetings, or the next time you are in Columbus.  More details on these and other developments can be found within.  Go Bucks!!
